“Springs” into action with Millbrook Contract Beds

When choosing a mattress it’s important to recognise the importance of the spring system.  Traditional open spring constructions are still widely used, and here at Millbrook Contract Beds we have many such examples on offer – take a look especially at our Academic Collection.  But if you’re after the next level in comfort technology, a pocket spring mattress may well be what you’re looking for.  But just what is a pocket spring system, and what advantages does it have to give you the best possible night’s sleep?  And why choose a pocket spring mattress over its open spring counterpart?  Let’s take a closer look…

Open spring mattresses were a revolution in comfort when they were first introduced – after all, mattresses stuffed with straw were commonplace beforehand (imagine sleeping on those today! Yikes!).  These new open spring systems moved with the sleeper, adapting to their rolls in the night and automatically changing to give support where previous beds could not.  This changed the way people experienced sleep – and it meant the local horses had less interest in eating your bed!

This system wasn’t without its flaws, however, and one process stood out as a problem: what we refer to as “roll-together”.  This occurs when a couple (more often than not if there is a clear difference in size or weight) are sharing a bed and one moves in the night – making the whole mattress change shape and bring the two of you together!  In practice this is far less romantic than it sounds and can lead to a disturbed and unfulfilling sleep for one or both of you.

So what’s the solution?  The problem is that not enough support is given to the individual sleepers, and that’s because an open coil mattress acts as a single unit.  When you move one corner of the mattress, even the furthest corner moves (albeit slightly) in response.  To many people this isn’t a problem, but we feel that every buyer of our contract beds should have the option of that little bit extra comfort.

Pocket spring systems have been around since the early 1900s, but have recently experienced a due surge in popularity. In essence, they’re individual coils stitched into their own little fabric holders which are all placed closely together to create a mattress when sandwiched between two layers of comfortable material.  They each move independently of one another, working to provide support for both yourself and your sleeping partner wherever you require it – regardless of any weight differences.  They go a long way to eliminate the problem of “roll-together” and even if you’re sleeping alone they form to the contours of your body, letting you sleep in an even more natural position.

While an open coil bed is sufficient for many, we here at Millbrook like to offer an increasingly popular alternative to those who would like to see what additional comfort these little pockets of joy can bring to your contract beds.  Don’t just take our word for it – try them out for yourself and find out first-hand.
